chapter 8: China and the world

  • The first thing that caught my attention on this chapter were the feet of women in China. The tightening of feet was a common practice for women. But food binding was common in young girls and women and deformed her feet which was part of their beauty and had special shoes decorated with embroidered flowers.
    • i cant imagine the pain these ladies went through just to fit the standard in china. The fact that their bones were cracked and feet were extremely deformed was cruel. These things were happening when girls were at a young age. Many different cultures and countries have their own unique practice and not all are positive. I believe it usually has to do with religious practices, culture, society, and the tradition of many of these people.
    • Females are usually the ones always being degraded and seem to have to follow a form of practice from what I seen throughout history. On the other hand, women were becoming more involved in their communities besides working in the textile production. "Women operated restaurants, sold fish and vegetables, and worked as maids, cooks, and dressmakers." There was also opportunities that weren't as great like  prostitutes, entertainers, and concubines. The downside to this was being and shunned and having a higher chance of not becoming someone's wife. Needless to say, they were attached to selling their bodies and entertainment for others.
